I really want to be a vegetarian! Any tips are extremely welcome! I was thinking about going to a nutritionist, is that a good idea, or would they say its not healthy for a 14+ girl to be a vegetarian? And how do I get necessary things, like protein, iron, b12, etc.? Would vitamins help? I'm a wreck! Please help!

Yeah, I'm right there with you! And I'm definitely not going to see the doctor/nutritionist...I did that before and the both jumped down my throat. I'm using a multi-vitamin that has everything but the protein in it, just to be safe. You should try that

Most doctors I know don't even know what a vegan is, and one said to me that if we were meant to be vegan we'd all have four stomachs...*rolls eyes*...his anatomy was wrong, as well as his knowledge of herbivourous animals.

I just went vegetarian a couple months ago too, and it's really hard when you first start out. Espically if you love meat, or live with a family of carnivores. I never went to a nutritionist or a doctor, I just decided one day that I'd had enough (that and Angela showed me that horrible "Meet Your Meat" video... ;_; ). So I looked up a vegetarian food pyramid on Google Images, printed it out, and kept it as sort of a guide. That kinda helped. Next I made a list on MS Word of what I need. Protien, Iron, Calcium, etc. And I put examples under each one of foods that would give me that. I used Google a lot ("What foods can a vegetarian eat for calcium?") and eventually made a pretty good list. The website that helped me out a lot was this e-book. Hope anything I said helps, and good luck. ^^

Be sure to check the ingredients of multi-vitamins.

Thankyou everybody! These are all great resources! Especially the nutritionist advice. I almost saw one. *Wipes forehead dramaticly* I have come up with an agreement with my parents, and this is as far as I could get it to be anywhere close to veg. I will eat a vegetarian meal when its offered and if not it will be chicken or fish. No turkey no cow no veil even though I never ate it and no lamb. So just chicken and fish and hopefully it will become just fish and then completely vegetarian! Yay! Thanks again everyone!

Thanks everybody for all your help! I am now what is called a semi-vegetarian. I (only if needed) will only intake chicken four times a week, and the rest vegetarian.

That's good . I hope you don't have to eat any chicken at all. Chicken is pretty disgusting. Every time I see meat, I think of the animal it came from. It makes me want to puke.

A good way to be educated and start yourself on becoming a vegetarian is to go by "the three R's" (reduce the number of animals you eat, refine which animal products you eat, and replace animal products with veg options). I had really good results with it (even if it's a gradual adjustment). A good resource for more information about veg eating is: www.humaneteen.org/?q=node/41

Not trying to be offensive, but there really is no such thing as a semi vegetarian.. otherwise every general meat-eating omni you see can also be called a "semi vegetarian"(=meat eater).. so saying that you're "semi vegetarian" really doesn't mean much.. Anyway, I really hope that you could get off of the chicken eating habit soon. There is absolutely no reason that someone would have the eat the flesh of a chicken to get proper nutrition, and chickens actually tend to have it the worst in the meat(and egg, of course) industry..
