A young man who slit a dog's throat during his birthday party has been sentenced to nine months in prison in South Australia.
The District Court at Port Augusta heard the maltese dog needed 10 stitches to its neck after Jay Andrew Gurr, 20, attacked the dog at his sister's house at Snowtown in 2007.
He was also sentenced this week for unrelated offences, including drink-driving and property damage.
Judge Julie McIntyre said she tried to show as much mercy as she could in setting his nine month non-parole term.
She said she took account his youth, difficult family circumstances and efforts to overcome drug addiction.
