Let’s debate anmal welfare versus animal rights. Common animal rights ethics: -Using animals is morally wrong. -We should not use animals to benefit ourselves. -We should not invariably overrule the interests of animals with human interests. -We should not inflict pain or death on animals. -We should always treat animals humanely and eliminate the human-made causes of animal suffering. -Believe in eliminating exploitation and often see it as slavery Common animal welfare ethics: -Using animals is morally right. -We can use animals to benefit ourselves. -Our interests are almost always more important than the interests of animals. -We should not cause animals 'unnecessary' pain or death. -We should treat animals as humanely as convenient to us. -Believe in regulating exploitation. from: www.zoosavvy.com/animal-rights-vs-animal-welfare.html I would have used my own thoughts, but I felt taking them from that page would be immensely easier. Issues: 1. Should one be more concerned over an animal’s rights, their welfare (not necessarily animal welfare movement,) or both? 2. Do animal welfare actions (i.e. what Temple Grandin did) impede upon the animal rights movement? 3. Who has the right to decide what rights animals have? 3a. Do animals have rights?

It seems to me that animal welfare is very human-driven, like a way to justify the fact that we're using animals like... I dunno. Tools? Objects? Ugh, pardon me. It's very early here as well. I think that animal rights is the more concerning issue.
Keeping in mind that I am not at all religious (don't even get me started there XD) I don't think that animals were put here for us to use and abuse as we please. They should get to go about their own lives, without us breeding them for sales in pet stores, orfarming them like we do crops. I see this as a fine example of human arrogance. "I want to do this, so I will. Because I can." Or something to that effect.
-far too tired to look that up- I'll come back to this.... Eventually.... Maybe.....
I don't think any one person or group does. This would be a difficult thing to agree upon. People siding with the "God put them here for us to use as we see fit" option would think that they don't have, or need, any rights at all. While people like me would say "give them the same rights as people". Then there's a lot of people in the middle. We'd all have to work together to find some sort of common ground. -snicker- All of us working together. Right. Like that'd last for more than half an hour.
I think so. Humans aren't any better than other animals. We, ourselves, are animals as well (though most of us like to ignore that fact). In my opinion, asking if animals have rights is like asking if... disabled people have rights. They may not be able to physically do the same things we do, or mentally function at our level. But we aren't any better than them because of that. It isn't their fault. It's the same with animals. They should be able to live their lives like they would naturally, without humans screwing things up for them.
((Disclaimer: Of course I meant absolutely nothing offensive in this last section. I'm just blunt... Please don't pelt me with rotten fruit? -hides behind Emily-))

I'm Animal Rights. To me, although animal welfare helps animals a tiny bit in the short term and makes their lives slightly more comfortable, it just ends up hindering the movement by making omni's less sympathetic because they fall for the 'it's had a good life so it's ok to kill it and eat it' mentality. It just makes it harder to convince people imo when they see good husbandry yet ignore the bigger picture of slavery and death.
