My mom's friend from work gave us their guinea pig over a month ago. They also gave us a hermit crab that day without even warning us. In all, they've given us four of their companion animals for several reasons.
First, they gave us a hermit crab named Tex, because they didn't want to take care of him or something. He unfortunately died over a year or so ago.
Then, they gave us Valentino, another guinea pig, because they didn't want to clean his cage or something.
After that, they gave us the hermit crab and Snitzel, the guinea pig. I don't know why they gave us another hermit crab, but I do know that the reason they gave us Snitzel is the girl taking care of him was supposedly allergic to him.
I still have to set up a ten gallon tank properly for the hermit crab and come up with a name for her. The reason it's not set up yet is my mom hasn't taken me for sand or anything for her, yet. I also have to switch her to a more natural diet than crappy hermit crab food that isn't even really healthy. I have to re-research on hermit crab diet, because it's been a while since I've cared for a hermit crab.
The poor girl came in one of those small containers, sometimes called Kritter Keepers. They remind me of something little kids would keep insects in. I'm going to guess it's about 4"x3" big or so. That is very tiny. She'll hopefully be going into the ten gallon tank soon. She's also in a painted shell. I'll be putting new shells in with her, though, so she can change if she wants. If she does change, I'm throwing that shell away ASAP.
She just finished molting. I'm happy she had no problems with that besides the fact that she had a surface molt. Oh yeah, they also put her in GRAVEL! That is horrible for molting, because the hermit crab cannot dig down well enough.
I took some pictures of her a half an hour ago or so. They are pretty big.
