For the last year or so, my cat, Yuki, hasn't been using her litter box, so today my mum told me I either had to find a shelter to take her or my mum would put her down. I've had Yuki for five years and I don't know how I could give her to a shelter, but I don't want her put down. What should I do?

There are some solutions to this. Has your cat seen the vet for this? This problem can be due to some serious medical problems and needs to be fixed. I'll try to find a page on what you can do. My cat was being stubborn and not using the litter box, and I found an awesome page before. I think it's gone, though, but I'm not sure. How often do you scoop the box, and how often do you replace the litter and clean it out? If your mother decides not to care, don't let her put the cat down. There are some nice people out there who would be willing to help your cat and give her a nice home. You just have to find them. I recommend finding a cat rescue instead of going to a shelter if you plan to give her up to an organization. If you go to a shelter, she may be considered "unadoptable" and will just be put down anyway. A cat rescue will probably take the time to actually help the cat. Try finding one on www.petfinder.com. If you can't, try calling around (local shelters, vets' offices, etc.) The problem is definitely fixable, since your cat isn't that old. She does not need to be put down.

I clean the litter every day and replace it every three days or so. Yes, Yuki has been to the vet. At first he thought is was a medicial condition and gave her meds. We also changed her food, but when he examined her again, he said there was nothing wrong and she just had an "attitude problem".

Have there been any recent changes in the past month or so?
If you plan to get rid of her, try finding a local cat rescue, who will probably not put her down.

Unfortunately, cats usually see not using the litter box as protesting and don't think that their care-givers will get rid of them or anything if they do it.

No. Nothing has changed in the last month. If I have to, which it looks like I do, I'm going to give her to the no-kill shelter I live near. I volunteer there and get all my animals there, well, I got Yuki from a friend who was going to put her down because she was the runt.

Is there a specific spot where your cat is doing this, or is it just all over? Is your cat spayed/neutered?
As long as they are not medical, litter box problems are always solvable. Even if they are medical, they can often be solved with medicines. You just have to not give up.
