I'll let everyone else start with this one before I do.

I admit I am guilty of killing horseflies and bees because of an irrational fear of them I have, but I assure you I beat myself merclessly (physically and mentally) every time I do. It always just happens out of fear driven urges, or my father comes over and does it just to shut me up. Horseflies attack, and I have ben stung in the eye too many times by bees.
With that said, I must say I am horribly repulsed at the killing of any creature. My biggest peeve is when someone says 'They were infesting my home, Lindsay. It was my right.' News flash! We are the biggest pests on this planet! We have infested the homes of EVERY creature that has ever called this once beautiful planet home! The bugs were there first and they deserve no lower treatment then us as humans. Now, I'm not saying you have to go and let your house become infested. There's enviormentally, non-lethal things out there that keep the bugs out without harming ANYONE! And if you see a bug in your home, don't murder it, catch it somehow and put him outside! Most of the time, he's there because he got trapped, not because he wants to be!

I agree with the above. Bugs shouldn't be killed because they've found a convenient place to build a nest or hive in your hope, or just for fun. They don't know that the house "belongs" to you, they just see a nice place to start a family. They aren't doing it to freak you out, or out of spite. It's survival.
I don't personally kill bugs, but I do trap them for my turtle. Damien is the world to me and if he wants to eat bugs and such, I'm not going to refuse to give him any just because of my beliefs. I'm vegetarian, but I'm not going to force him to be one.
I also am guilty of killing spiders. With a lot of satisfaction afterwards. They terrify the hell out of me. Grabbing a flip flop when I see one is as automatic as breathing at this point. I won't say that I feel bad about it after it's dead, or that I guarentee that it's killed quickly and painlessly, because that's not true. I don't like em. XP

You're like my sister ith spiders. Cept, she'll be like (at any time of the day or night) "Lindsay! I'm gonna kill it!" So I'll dash in and grab hold of it before she can get her hands on it. I love spiders XD Just bees and horsefies for my terror!!

Does anyone have any ideas of alternatives to killing them?
I usually catch bugs that I see in my house. A few weeks ago, I caught a spider that was near my cat's litter box in a cup and let it go outside. I just did that with a moth, too, and I did save a fly that way also. A few minutes ago, I caught a fly in my hand and took it downstairs to let it go outside. It definitely was not happy, but at least it's better than getting caught in one of the fly ribbons my mom put up. My family usually doesn't give a crap about them at all and seems not to care that they're even living creatures.
I've also saved countless caterpillars that were on the roads near where I live. There are usually tons out on the road, and I try to same a lot of them. This year, however, I only saw one or two.

Repel them.
I know that mosquitos (and possibly other insects) don't like Citronella, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't kill them.
Or maybe find something to trap them with (like a wasp trap) then release them outside.

Well there we go. ;D
I've never used citronella oil, but you can buy citronella candles. They come in votives, and in candlesticks. At our Dollar Tree they sell them in the summertime. It's really nice when we're all hanging outside and stuff.

We got one of those tiki torch things at a local dollar store, because my brother thought they were neat.
I remember the one time I sniffed a citronella candle thinking it was a regular candle, because I didn't read the label or anything XD. It was one of those huge ones at the Dollar Tree. I'm not sure if they still sell the same ones, however, because that was over a year ago.

Not for lack of trying, I'm sure. Stupid bodyguards/secret service... XD
But what you said does make sense, except I'm not going to sit up at the property and blow away the 850million biting and horseflies that land all over me. It lands on me, I swing at it. Doesn't want to run the risk of getting killed? Then it shouldn't land on me. I feel justified in doing that, life's not risk-free and those things HURT.
But yeah, I think it is crappy that people kill the harmless bugs just because they're annoying or irritating. People just don't compare animal situations to human ones sometimes. Like in animal shelters. Would it be legal to treat humans that way......?

I don't kill the bugs in my house, I don't use bug spray for when I go outside (Which is saying something because I work at a nature center and spend 6 hours outside a day, five days a week, every week all summer), when horse flys or anything land on my arm I just shake them off. once I wasn't fast enough with a horse fly and found out I was very allergic to their bites... The bad way... The bite swelled up untill it was around an egg.... And my throat started closing up... Thankfully it didn't close up enough to call an ambulance, but yah... I wore long sleeves after that, instead of putting on bug spray.

^Wow.
Maybe you should try to repel them away with citronella. It doesn't kill them or anything.

I think we have a cintronella candle on our deck, but at work? We're walking constantly. Do they have sprays? If so, I really HATE spraying stuff on my body.... Pet peeves of mine... So yah. Besides, I'm a SCA (Summer Camp Assistant) so all the kids spray enough bug spray on themselves, if I walk right behind them, I should be good. Haha. Some of the campers are scary that way...

Lol, yah. Long sleeves! YAY! For some reason, I'm always cold, so it works out... And if it gets too hot, we just don't go outside... We watch an "educational" movie instead.
