I can NOT stand when I'm watching one of those animal rescue shows on Animal Planet, and they rescue a dog, and I'm so happy for it! But then, they have to put it through a "health check" which detects health, behavioral, and mental problems.
Basically, if the dog growls or snaps at a rubber hand reaching towards the food dish, they put it down. If it has heartworms, they put it down. if it has leash problems, or has anxiety, they put it down. WTH!!!
My argument with the food possessiveness is... THIS DOG WAS ON THE STREETS FOR WEEKS WITHOUT FOOD AND YOU ARE GOING TO SNATCH IT AWAY WITH AN INANIMATE OBJECT!!! Really? Also, the popular series Dogtown, NEVER put down a dog, no matter what its problem! It's called training! If we killed everyone who were possessive over their food, we would have a very small human population compared to what it is now.
Heartworms: It is called treatment!

This site, though a bit iffy in my opinion, says heartworm treatment can be costly, and is even fatal at times. It does not however, mention any signs of suffering in the animal except the small chance your animal may cough, etc. If treatment is available, they should use it. I DEFINITELY think that heartworm treatment should be available at all times... possible petitions...
Again, with the last ones, it is called training!! I think we should train these humans into using more humane treatments.
Most of those television shows on Animal planet about rescues, almost all of them "humanely" euthanize animals with "challenges."
