Horse riding is unnatural. Why do you let someone ride your back and tell me how you feel? I give people ponyback rides all the time. I ride in a hackamore (Which means NO BIT), I ride bareback, and I use verbal cues. I never touch my horses sides, ever. I ride with friends and we herd cows (Which she LOVES). My horse also stays outside constantly. She never once sets foot in a stable. Has been in a stable in... five years? At which point I didn't own her. I also don't lunge her. I find it boring and pointless. You know what. Let's transport you back 300 years and see how well you travel. Personally, I don't like showing... at all. Not the showing you do anyways. Seeing how slow you can make the horse go and stuff like that.

ZIZIA, I don't mind anything you said (hey, there's a million different opinions in riding horses, right? ), except for your comment about western pleasure and it just being "seeing how slow you can make your horse go". As a general statement, this is not true. Yes, you get the trainers/riders that that is all they care about, thus creating ugly moving horses that look like they're about to fall flat on their faces, but please don't think of WP as a whole based on these poor examples. A true western pleasure horse moves with impulsion (really using their hind end, light on their front) and, in my opinion, is very nice to ride. Good riders/trainers do not just try to get their horse as slow as possible, they teach the horse to use their bodies properly to get the lift in their backs and the muscle to be able to go as slow as they are physically capable to do in a comfortable manner. This is based on the horse's natural movement and conformation.

i have nothing against a horse and his/her human friend riding together. i dont like large scale horse races where many of the jockeys dont even care about their horse (the people that only have a horse to win money). but i cannot assume that everyone with a horse is insensitive and selfish, i know most people love their horse (or any other pet) immensely!
BUT, overall, people owning animals or even animals owning people (pffft, that'd be the day), is wrong. once a women asked me if i would drink even he happiest of cows milk, i said no, of course and she asked me "why? if it weren't for humans, many species would cease to exist." well, here's me view: first of all, it's not my milk, it was made for that cows calf. and they should exist in the first place! don't get me wrong i love cat, dogs, hamsters, et cetera, i'm not saying we should kill than or anything like that! but NO creature should ever be dependent on another, THAT is not natural; to breed a creature until it is completely dependent on you. domestic animals NEED us, and i dont think they should need to need us just to survive. i mean look at us! we cant even take care f them, all the abuse and neglect, come on. people have a weird obsession with control and power, we just have to be needed and in control, we need to the power, its fucked up. so yeah, thanks.

As I said, if he didn't want me on him I wouldn't be, plain and simple. I really do not have a problem with using animals for entertainment purposes (aka showing horses, dogs, whatever) Doesn't mean I support beating the crap out of animals just for the fun of it so don't even start with that crap. I'm sure you're anti-using animals for entertainment though so go ahead and bitch at me for that, too. we wont bitch you out! just because we have different view points doesn't mean you're wrong. yelling at you and reciting our perspective wont change anything, it'll just get all our pantie in a bunch!

Just warning everyone ahead of time before they get themselves in trouble with the rules. Please try to keep this board fight-free, or all who fight will be punished.

first of all, I'll start by saying that I think human companionship with other animals comes as naturally to us as a species as the desire to eat, drink, and seek shelter. ideally, humans and non human animals would be able to maintain a companionship with animals while both creatures still maintain a sense of independence and freedom. however, with urbanization and the irreversible domestication of thousands of species, this ideal isn't fully achievable.
so, with that said, do I consider the process of domestication and "owning" pets a bad thing? yes and no. as an example, if wolves were not domesticated by humans those 15,000 years ago, our lives would not be enriched by the companionship of the general canis lupus familiaris we imagine when we think of 'dogs' today. there are certainly countless instances of humans "owning" dogs where both human and dog benefit from the companionship- dog gets food, water, and shelter in exchange for giving his undying affection and friendship. the human "bought" the dog and certainly does control certain aspects of his or her life, but both creatures benefit from the situation in a way that both creatures can live happily. in these instances, I am perfectly fine with the concept of "owning" a domesticated animal.
but as for the nasty exploitation of other creatures that we humans are infamous for, we often screw dogs out of our side of the deal. it is when humans abuse and neglect a creature that is completely dependent on us that I wish that the dogs we know today were never domesticated from wolves so long ago. "owning" pets in this way is unacceptable.
basically, if your description of "owning" a pet is more like caring for the animal as a child or family member and treating it as an equal.. rather than regarding the animal as a mindless piece of property.. I am fine with it. even if the animal is technically "purchased" and "belongs" to you, both parties benefit from the situation.
if your description of "owning" a pet is cruelly treating it as a slave that must submit to your every whim; serving you and getting nothing in return.. no, owning pets is not okay.
in short, it depends.
(sorry if this is all over the place and makes no sense. my brain is foggy right now.)

I personally don't understand the people who think having pets is inhumane. As long as you take good care of them and respect them it's perfectly fine to me.
We have capacity to feel and care, why do we need to separate ourselves from other animals just because they're a different species? I'm sure a lot of pet owners don't see themselves as actual "owners", it's more of like a mutal care and love and respect
And I totally support that.

Yeah right, horse loves being enslaved and forced to herd other beings for your pleasure and enslavement. You need to put yourself in the position of those animals - cows, and the horses you harm for once...you'll probably realise how wrong you truly are.
